I serve as President and Professor of Systematic Theology at Cedarville University in southwest Ohio. We are a Christian University with 3,760 students in more than 130 programs of study and NCAA Div II athletic programs. What makes us distinct is that faculty and staff concur with our doctrinal statement, every undergraduate student graduates with a Bible minor, a biblical worldview is integrated into every class, and we worship God together five days a week in chapel. We seek to have academic excellence with a Gospel purpose.
God blessed me by giving me godly parents who reared me in a small town in South Carolina called Honea Path. Living in the country was great. Fishing, hunting, horses, hard work, hanging out with friends, and sports took up most of my time. I played basketball, football, and ran track during high school. After high school, I owned and operated several karate schools. I received a good education at a Christian university in Anderson, SC, and then God led me to pursue further education at Southeastern Seminary under the leadership of Paige Patterson. While there, I earned a Master of Divinity degree and a Ph.D. in systematic theology. In 2004, I followed Dr. Patterson to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where I served as Vice President for Student Services and Communications and taught Systematic Theology, Baptist History, the Christian Home, a nationwide revival class, and preaching classes. I love the local church and local church pastors and have written several books on various aspects of the doctrine of the church. I love to lead people and preach the Gospel. Most of all I am humbled that God allows me to have a part in His glorious plan.
I love spending time with my family. I have been married to my wife Joy since 1999. We met in seminary. She holds a Master of Divinity degree and a Th.M. degree in systematic theology focusing on women’s studies. She is a committed stay-at-home wife and mom. I am proud of her because she is the best mother and wife in the world. God has truly blessed me with a person who loves Jesus more than me, shares my desire to see the world know Christ, and spends every moment educating our children in the way of the Lord. She is a Proverbs 31 woman. She’s probably smarter than I am, too, but don’t tell her that I told you so. If you want to keep up with us, then send me a friend request on Facebook. I can’t forget about our dog, Shadow. We treat him like one of our children.
God blessed us by allowing us to adopt Rachel. She is sweet, articulate, intelligent, delightful, and my little princess. Joy and I plan to adopt again in the future and hope that everyone will consider adoption. I have also written an article about adoption where I describe why I believe it is at the heart of the Gospel.
Samuel is our gift from God. He was born in 2011 and keeps the family laughing. I call him my little buddy, and we have a lot of fun together. He loves to laugh and meet new people, so be sure to shake his hand if you see him. We named him Samuel, as Hannah said in 1 Samuel 1:20, “I have asked for him from the LORD.” His middle name is David because we hope that he grows to be a man after God’s own heart.
A Fun-Loving Guy
I do enjoy having fun. I really enjoy hunting deer or ducks, fishing, practicing karate, diving into the ocean depths, lifting weights, playing football, or shooting hoops. Every now and then, I’ll do something a little more crazy just for the fun of it, like running in a 13-mile mud run, rattlesnake hunting, alligator hunting, or jumping out of an airplane. I also really enjoy fellowship with friends and colleagues who share my desire to win the world for Jesus Christ.
